What’s actually going on
Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder is a medical diagnosis. It means persistent, low sexual desire that causes you distress. Not low desire because you’re tired or having relationship issues. Low desire is there regardless of the situation or partner, and it bothers you.
It affects an estimated 40% of women at some point. It is not a character flaw. It is not something that gets better by itself. It is also not something most doctors bring up unprompted.
How it works
Addyi is not a hormone or aphrodisiac. It works on neurotransmitters in the brain, specifically serotonin and dopamine, which play a role in sexual desire. You take it once daily at bedtime.
It is not an on-demand medication. It works over time. Clinical trials lasted 24 weeks, and most patients who respond to it begin noticing effects within 4-8 weeks.
Is this for you
Addyi is FDA-approved for women under 65 with acquired, generalized HSDD. This means your low desire developed after a period of normal desire, happens across situations, and causes you personal distress.
It is approved for both premenopausal and postmenopausal women under 65. It is not for women who have never had sexual desire or for situational low desire caused by relationship problems.
Important: Do not drink alcohol within 2 hours of your bedtime dose. Combining Addyi with alcohol may cause low blood pressure and fainting. If you plan to drink, skip the dose that night.

Is Addyi actually FDA-approved?
Yes. Addyi (flibanserin) received FDA approval in 2015 for premenopausal women. In late 2025, approval expanded to postmenopausal women under 65. It is the only FDA-approved oral medication for HSDD.
How long until it works?
Addyi is not an on-demand medication. It is taken daily and builds over time. Many report changes within 4-8 weeks. If there’s no effect after 8 weeks, discuss with your provider.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Addyi?
Do not drink alcohol within 2 hours of your bedtime dose. Mixing Addyi and alcohol can cause low blood pressure and fainting. If you drink more than moderately, skip the dose.
